Jagdgeschwader 5 'Ice Hunters'

Luftwaffe 2nd pattern presentation dagger for sale manufactured by SMF, Solingen. The Luftwaffe dagger with a pleasant yellow / orange ivorine grip, and complemented with fine silver-aluminium wire binding. The pommel and crossguard in polished aluminium.   

The dagger with a stunning highest quality faux rose Damascus blade, the obverse with a raised Luftwaffe eagle/swastika. The reverse with a raised designation, 'Jagdgeschwader 5 "Eismeer Jager". The blade with a beautiful raised gilt SMF makers panel. The scabbard in darkened steel and with aluminium bands. The dagger complete with its silver-aluminium portepee, and a set of hangers with blue & silver braidings on blue velvet backings.

Condition report: The dagger remaining in excellent towards near mint condition. Perfect grip with beautiful deep lustre. Fine porteppe without fraying. The blade in excellent condition with superb faus rose damascus finishing along with raised panels The gilt lost to the eagle and dedication. The gilt remaining to the SMF panel. Scabbard clean, free from any dents or rusting. The hangers clean and free from adverse use or wear.

Notes: Jagdgeschwader 5 were located in Northern Norway during the war years, and as such were called the 'Ice Hunters' (Eismeerjager). It is believed that a small number of these daggers were ordered from SMF for officers with the unit. All the parts to this dagger are known SMF parts as detailed in Wittmann's publication on Luftwaffe Daggers.

Provenance: A part of an extensive Austrian collection 1950s - 1980s. Acquired for the French-based Pierre-Ange Caravano Collection in the 1980s, and remaining in that collection until 2024.
